DNS Monitoring via APM

I have put together a template to monitor our DNS servers that are running on Solaris 10.

We are getting periodic timeouts and name server errors on the DNS port monitors, and the DNS User experience monitors.

There are no CPU/memory/interface issues on the servers.

What I am looking for is some engineering level documentation on the above listed monitors so that I can explain to both the software vendor and our network engineers how Solarwinds collects its information and what the different error messages mean.

The DNS User Experience component monitor attempts to use the DNS protocol (http://www.freesoft.org/CIE/Topics/77.htm) to resolve a name or IP address with the selected DNS server, waits for the response, and then compares the response against the expected values.

Do you think these timeouts are related to the way Orion APM is monitoring your DNS servers? If so, I would suggest opening a support ticket.  They'll want you to capture diagnostics.  If you can run C:\Program Files\Solarwinds\Orion\SolarWindsDiagnostics.exe when one or more of your monitors is timing out, that would help.
