Avaya serial numbers

Hey guys,

first time posting here and new to all of this. I've been digging through the web GUI a bit on Solarwinds and I've been trying to have it pull serial numbers for Avaya switches when looking at node details but I can't seem to figure out how to get it working. Is this something Solarwinds supports, pulling serial numbers from Avaya switches? Most of my research shows that it's do-able, but for only Cisco gear.

Do I have to add anything custom to get this working?

Any help here is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It can be done using a feature called a universal device poller. Any time there is an SNMP based bit of information you want to collect that Solarwinds does not collect out of the box you can just tell it the OID you want to have it check.

Thanks for your quick response, I appreciate the help! I've gone through the video and also the KB and it seems easy enough to do. The problem is finding the right OID in the MIB database. I'm struggling to find anything for an Avaya serial number.

I've tried checking Avaya, Nortel, Extreme Networks & Synoptics and I haven't been able to find an OIDs in the MIB database.

By any chance do you know an OID that would work to pull the serial numbers or can you point me to somewhere that can help narrow it down?

All help is greatly appreciated.

What Avaya Model's are you working with?

Mostly 5698's, 5520's and some 4950's.

With the Avaya models I've dealt with, I've had decent luck using generic mibs for some identifiers.

Take a look at the following library for some Avaya oids to use:

MIB files repository

AVAYA-ENTITY-MIB

ENTITY-MIB

This is one I have used before:

entPhysicalSerialNum

1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.11

Unfortunately with MIB hunting it is a needle in a haystack and you just have to test them til you find one that suits your needs.

This seems to work nicely, thank you! Now, next issue. Most of my switches are built in stacks, so there are multiple serial numbers per stack. This OID is only showing the serial number of the master unit in the stack.

Any idea how I can have it reveal all of the serial numbers in the stack?

Well with lots of tinkering I have managed to get this to work for the 5000 series switches.

I did an SNMP walk and went through alot of OID's until I finally came across this:

.1.3.6.1.4.1.45.1.6.3.3.1.1.7.8.1.0 - This displayed the first serial number

.1.3.6.1.4.1.45.1.6.3.3.1.1.7.8.2.0 - This displayed the second serial number.

So, in the Orion Universal Device Poller, I created a new poller that looked for OID "1.3.6.1.4.1.45.1.6.3.3.1.1.7.8". This then pulled all serial numbers in a stack. I have tested this on a few different 5000 series Avaya switches with multiple stacks, some having only 2, some having 7, and it works beautifully!

I'm going to keep testing and assigning this to different nodes over the next few days. Once completed I'll be doing the same for the 4000 series switches. I hope this information helps anybody in the future frantically googling.
