Maximum number of network devices in NCM?

Hello there,

I wanted to ask your opinion for the maximum capacity of network devices in NCM. Recently I encountered scenario with around 70.000 devices.

When checking the scalability guide, NCM can handle around 30.000 devices with the help of additional polling engines.

Is there any way to reach 70k?

If one would increase the nightly job interval to few days or maybe even disable it? (and use real time detection via syslog)

Also, do you have experience with using EOC with few NCM instances?

Our published upper limit is 30K nodes, but I have seen more than that in some cases. If you do go above that limit you can run into a multitude of performance and other issues - depending on your environment, the device types, and the size of the configs. If you are generally aiming to monitor 70K nodes, than a deployment of 3 instances may be your best approach to ensure full supportability and proper function/performance.

I don't see why 30,000 and not 1,000,000 (if i dont backup every node every day)

It's should be how many jobs you run per X time to get the NCM engine capacity

Experience here with multiple NCMs we scale out to 90.000 devices.

That’s what I implemented at my Client. 3 NCM Instances with EOC , however EOC is currently not in use. We redirect our users via an own landingpage to the right instance.

So the official wording is: 10.000 NCM Devices per Poller, maximum of 3 Pollers per Instance. I have had up to 20.000 on a single poller without major issues. you would need to tweak the simultaneous download jobs, some templates to have a better prompt detection etc. but be aware, it is not officially supported.

In your case as jpetkevich mentioned you would need to spin up multiple instances

To add another thing to the discussion: EOC is used for Reporting over all 3 instances of NCM. I wasn't Aware that the customer is doing this...until I updated EOC during the day as to my knowledge it wasn't used anyway.... I was wrong and received some phonecalls

unfortunately just the reports.

as it is a NCM only Installation the EOC doesn't bring too much value in Terms of visibility and usability over all 3 lines
