Need to know how to setup an alert

Hi,

we use less than 80% free for warning less than 90% free for critical on disk space. One of our servers has a 3TB drive and the owner does not want an alert until there is 75 GB's free or less. How can I setup a custom alert/poller for this to work?

I would suggest watching the videos - understanding trigger condition logic and understanding alert reset logic. Server & Application Monitor (SAM) Training - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support for instructions on how to do this.

danbran's suggestion, while powerful, is a bit advanced. A much simpler approach would be to exclude the volume(s) you don't want to alert on in the Trigger Condition of your existing alert. Below is an example where the alert triggers for any volume not named 'C:\ Label: 2EC5DBDA'.

Once you've excluded this volume from your existing alert, simply create a new alert specifically for this volume or volumes and specify a unique threshold.

aLTeReGo I would dare to disagree ...

Creating a separate alert for just this one disk is hugely inefficient. This is just one example - Tomorrow pat_m will need need another disk to trigger at 12TB, and then next Monday yet another disk to trigger at 10GB ... Are we talking about creating new alerts all the time this needs to be done?

I would agree however that SQL seems a bit too Advanced to start with. There is an alternative way, but the principle stays the same:

First, define additional custom property for Disk as Integer Type. Name it "ovrd_MB" for example. This will determine threshold in MBytes

example:

Second, create an alert with the following logic:

AND
* Node is UP
* Volume is Fixed Disk
ANY
     ALL
          ovrd_MB is empty
          Volume Percent Available is less then 5
     ALL
          ovrd_MB is not empty
          Volume Space Available is less then ovrd_MB

This will allow to manage disks in a much more efficient way without the need to create multiple alerts.

Important: Last line will compare available space with your configured override. If I do it with SQL as sugegsted by danbran I can easily transform bytes into MBytes and then compare, but I am not sure if it is easy to do so in web-GUI. If not, please keep in mind that "Volume Space Available" is in bytes. Therefore you may need to have "ovrd_bytes" custom property instead of ovrd_MB. It makes it a bit less readable with loads of zero, but still I believe better than having to create multiple alerts

In your case the value of 75GB will look like this: ovrd_bytes = 75000000000
