Did you try clicking on the Edit button on the map and changing the scale setting for the map and then submitting?

I am not sure I understand what you are trying to achieve. Is that that you don't know what size of background image you have to use to fit the map in the column?
If so, you can find the column width in the view customization. Or, as Marie suggested, you can use scale on your map.
