Same Site Both Routers Down

All of my branch offices have two "wan edge" routers.

My problem is I need an alert when both routers are down in the same time-frame. There is "fail-over" between the two routers but I need a single alert if both routers go in the same office. I have 87 offices with this layout. Each office does have a unique SiteCode.

I can do single routers no problem. I need to two routers at the same site. I could create an alert for each site but 88 times? I would am hoping there is an easier way

This is the exact same scenario I had at my former company. I did it with groups (as alluded to here). This is the logic I used:

Group Name: EAST-WAN

Group Members: The 2 routers in my east data center (manually selected)

Group Name: EAST

Group Members: Everything else in my east data center (For this I used dynamic queries, so new devices were automatically added)

EAST depended on EAST-WAN / EAST-WAN is "Parent" of EAST

If EAST-WAN was down (both routers), then I would get 3 total alerts: router 1, router 2, and the group (assuming out of the box alerts) were down, but I would NOT get the hundreds of child devices.

My first thought is groups, you would need to create groups for each site, but it would only be one alert.

Basically you can set the group to use best status rollup so that both nodes need to be down for the group to go down and then alert on group status down.

How would you avoid getting flooded with alerts from all monitored nodes behind the edge routers, while still using the Group based alert?

In our site we don't have an A/B setup like this per se, but for each of our tiny satellites we created a group of nodes/etc for the site and then put the dependency on the upstream network device.

If that device goes down and the devices at the site can't be reached then they will go into an Unreachable state instead of down. Basically Orion saying that they can't be polled and may be down, but until the parent node/group comes up it won't know for sure.

PS, if the nodes CAN be polled and are up, they will reflect as up, but if they are down and the parent is down the child objects will be Unreachable.

And Unreachable will side step any Node/Interface/etc is Down types of alerting so you shouldn't get 13 billion Node is Down alerts just because your parents went down.

I'll look into Dependencies. But from how I understand them to work there can only be one "parent".

My issue comes up when both A and B go down. There was a back-hoe that hit the access point to the building, A service vault is flooded etc.

If the primary device fails the secondary takes and an alert is created by Orion for the primary device, not a problem. The primary resumes when it is "back" in service and the secondary reverts back standby.

I do not know of this - I must have totally missed this type of alerting - Would you point me in the right direction to find find more information?

I would like to thank everyone for their help and suggestions.

The solution I implemented was to create group for the WAN routers in each Office and then create the dependency of the office to the router group.

Following a naming convention I then created an alert rule for the status of those groups.

NOTE - The Alert "worked". As you may know here in Chicago we had a bit of a cold snap (-30 F). One of our offices lost total connectivity which trigger the alert. We inform management, they proactively "closed" the office until repairs were completed.
