NPM and NCM on the same box (syslog and traps)

I run both NCM and NPM (both latest versions) on the same box.  From the get go I have not installed the syslog and trap servers that come with NCM.  I assume this is because it detects the instances installed by NPM.

We are heavilly reliant on traps and syslog from an NPM perspective.  But I am thinking that in order to get Realtime Change Detection to work I would need to use the NCM instances?

Could someone please provide some guidance on how I can continue to see traps and syslog in NPM and use Real Time Change Detection in NCM?

ercornwell is absolutely correct.  In fact, the NCM Syslog Server and Trap server are copies of the ones that ship with NPM.   The RTCD process (ConfigAutoDownload.exe) can be called from any local Syslog or Trap server.

Mike,

You don't have to use the NCM Syslog or Trap server to get the RTCD working.  (You do have to pick which one you want to use however.)  You just have to setup the Orion Syslog/Trap server to do the same thing that the NCM server would have done.  The settings are identical.  You just have to setup a rule to trigger the configuration download exe to trigger with the IP address.

We have it setup this way and I get the messages immediately after making a change on a device.

I have the exact situation as Topic Creator.  It seems that if you have NPM and NCM running on the same server, you have to make the choice of which trap / syslog server you want to use.

NPM will give great visibility and be easily displayed on the website.

NCM will give the ability for real time change alerts.

It seems you can not have both on the same server.

Ive tried for a long time to get RTCA to work, but it never does, so long as the NPM syslog and trap reciever are running.

Its a shame really, as RTCA's were a major selling point of NCM.
