I got an error when I try to run NPM's Network Discovery

Question

Hi all,

I installed Solarwinds Orion Network Performance Monitor on Windows 2003 server.

I try to click Network Discovery.

But I got the error message as displayed in the attachment file.

But "Solarwinds Orion Module Engine" service haven't show up on Windows Services.

and no anti-virus software run on the Windows 2003 server.

May you please help give some advice on this problem ?

Hmm... It is quite strange. In this case it will be probably the best to create support ticket for deeper investigation.

To the SQL question: It very depends on the number of elements you wan't to monitor. The configuration is possible, supported, but with large number of elements or more modules installed it is not recommended (please reffer to http://www.solarwinds.com/documentation/Orion/docs/OrionAdministratorGuide.pdf at page 12 - Orion Requirements). In case you need this configuration, I suggest to have at least separate HDD for the database. If you wan't to install SQL Express edition (I assume because it's free), I suggest to install SQL Express 2008 R2 because it has much larger database size limit (AFAIK 2005 has 4GB and 2008 R2 has 10GB).

Hi Jan,

My NPM version is NOT 10.1.3, but it is v10.4

Besides, should I install "SQL server 2005 Express" on the same Windows 2003 server where NPM is installed ?
I still haven't install any SQL server.

Hi Rockjjsolar,

it looks like an error message from quite old NPM (I guess 10.1.3). Can you, please check the status of Module engine via Orion Service Manager? It usually takes quite long time until this service is fully started. In case you don't see this service, please try to restart your Orion server. In case it doesn't help, try to run Repair action on Orion Core Services (add/remove programs). Have you considered an upgrade to the newer NPM? Version 10.4 is already released and 10.4.1 will be soon.
