Thermal alerts

Hi -

Does anyone know if there's a way to configure alerting when system temperature reaches a defined threshold? We sometimes (too frequently) experience failures of our cooling systems and it would be great to know that a switch, router or server has exceeded what we condsider a safe operating temperature.

In order to use 'Custom Poller Name' and 'Custom Poller Numeric Statistic' in your alert trigger you need to change the "property to monitor" drop-down in the trigger condition tab to 'Custom Node Poller' from its default 'Node'.

As long as the device has a temperature sensor and is willing to report that value via SNMP you can create a Universal Device Poller (UnDP) for it. There are a few examples out of the box, one of them already doing that for Cisco devices.

Once you've assigned that UnDP to the devices you want to monitor, you can create an alert with this trigger condition:

Custom Poller Name is equal to NameOfYourPollerHere

Custom Poller Numeric Status is greater than or equal to 80

Replace '80' with whatever your threshold should be.

Thanks for the help! I’m running into a bit of problem, though – after hunting down the OID I wanted to create the custom UnDP poller and assigning the poller to the appropriate devices, I can’t see how add that as a trigger condition in the Alerts manager. There doesn’t seem to be an option for pointing to my newly-created poller anywhere, unless I’m looking at the wrong thing…..

Can you help straighten that out for me?
