Oracle cancels Solaris 12
That's a pretty big deal I think.
I used to run Solaris for a Nortel-based network management solution, but sadly it was a nightmare to learn, configure, and use. The system was frequently down, we received poor support from SUN, it left a bad taste in my mouth.
The local university in my town bought all Solaris servers and dumb work stations for their research and library stations (this was back around 2000). It made quite an impression when I scheduled a group of staff members to go there and see how it was a shining example of new technology and we saw all the workstations were hung. I think that condition lasted for four days, and during that time staff and students were unable to access library and Internet resources. I heard they fought that for three weeks and eventually packed it up and sent it back to the factory with a request for their money back.
The product can't be that bad or SUN wouldn't have stayed in business. But I see that it has less than 1/10 of one percent of market share as of 2017:

That's pretty hard to make a case for buying into a new Solaris solution, and without new customers, the company's got to do something else to generate interest and sales and income.
