64 bit Aware Application

Hi All

Is the solarwinds application(s) 64 bit aware? as all the exe's run in 32 bit compatibly.

i am only asking as we are currently having an issue with IPAM scans crashing the solarwindsbusinesslayerhost.exe with System out of memory when the DB server and Core server have free Physical memory and from the performance traces we have done it seems like the application cannot address more then 2GB of memory. You can create 64 bit aware exe's when you compiler them to be aware of more memory

It's mainly due to compatibility with the lowest common denominator. 32bit Windows still makes up a sizable percentage of peoples server infrastructure and 64bit (Windows) polling requires the monitored hosts to have 64bit counters, which 32bit machines do not. 64bit Windows machines do however have 32bit counters so that is why it's the default. Other component monitors such as PowerShell are dependent upon the bitness of the cmdlets installed on the machine. If script your using only has 32bit cmdlets then you need to run in 32bit mode. If you installed 64bit PowerShell cmdlets then that application monitor in SAM must use the 64bit Job Engine for the script to run properly.

Hey Mark,

All of the Orion core products are 32 bit. It looks like there may be an issue with mem for IPAM but chances are the fix could be address in the 32 bit code. Have you opened ticket on this? It would be interesting to see how this is corrected. I believe there is a significant amount of work that has to be done to offer 64 bit versions. But with that said, if you think 64 bit would help you could ask for that in the feature requests section of thwack.

I think that not too far in the future 32 bit OSs and apps will be hard to find. Almost every new PC I look at has a 64 bit Win OS. Then we'll have another story to tell about the old computer stuff we used to work with.

Hi Andy

i have opened a ticket with support (Just uploaded the Solarwinds Diag zip file). i fully believe that this will be fixed within the 32 bit code like you have pointed out most computer / apps i installed / look at nowadays are 64bit and that 32 bit is becoming to its end i will create a feature request for 64 bit version of all solarwinds applications i just feel that for a company and product like Solarwind we have not got a 64 bit version of the product yet

SAM 5.2 and greater include a 64bit Job Engine for polling. It's typically only used for collecting information from 64bit systems where 32bit counters may not always work. You can however, assign almost any application to use the 64bit Job Engine from within the application editor using the "Platform to run polling job" option pictured below.
