Monitor HTTP external sites

New user here hoping to get pointed in the right direction.

We utilize a proxy for all outbound web traffic. Sometimes our proxy has issues and won't pass http traffic but is still pingable.

What I was hoping to do is setup an external site like www.google.com and poll port 80 for HTTP. If our proxy experiences trouble solarwinds would alert on port 80 for www.google.com.

I was messing around with APM but really haven't had any success. Is this possible? Am I heading in the right direction?

Have you tried the HTTP User Experience Monitor.

This monitor should allow you to test this scenario.

Thanks for the reply Sham. I got this configured, there was just a bit of a learning curve on my part getting my proxy setup within the template so that it could actually poll.

We are doing similar polling through our proxy and wondering if you can help me. I can poll www.google.com and other web sites through our proxy but for some reason www.cnn.com fails. We use Bluecoat Systems proxies. Can you try this from your perspective. I would like to rule out the APM HTTP monitor being the problem. If it works for you, then the next step for us would be getting down to the sniffer level. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I tested www.cnn.com without issue this morning. I can't imagine it has anything to do with APM HTTP monitor. I assume you have it configured correctly if you have no issue polling google.com on port 80 using the HTTP monitor. There was a bit of a learning curve on my part figuring out how to expand the monitor and enable it to use a proxy and telling it which proxy to use.

If you are able to bring up www.cnn.com from a browser from the server that runs APM, and that browser is configured to use the same proxy...then I would think that would rule out any ACL or possibly a rule to disallow cnn.com on your proxy.
