Reboot Server Alerts

I have looked through the forums and support site but no one as clearly stated how to get IpMonitor to send an alert whenever a device (Windows, Linux, etc) has been rebooted. Is there a simple way to get this done in IpMonitor?

If so, how?

Hello Kris,

The best and easiest way to monitor if a system has rebooted is probably to monitor the System Up Time. Here's how:

Within the ipMonitor web interface, click the "Devices" tab
Click on "All Managed Devices"
Click on the Device in question you wish to Monitor.
Click "Add -> Add New Monitor"
Within the left-hand pane, click "SNMP"
Within the right-hand pane, click "Custom SNMP (Wizard)".
Ensure that the address and the SNMP community name of the system you wish to monitor are correct.
Replace the current OID with

1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3

Click "Next"
Next to SysUptime value, click the "Select" button.
Set the threshold to pass if greater (>) than 15 minutes.

As a result, the Monitor will fail and Alert if the System Uptime is 15 minutes or less.

Hope this gives you what you need. If anyone else has a different method to accomplish this, please feel free to share.

A quick question. I am running into issues trying to assign this to more then one machine at a time with IPMONITOR 10.

Also, is there a way to create a single monitor for this and then have the option to assign it to any new device as a smart monitor?

Hi Kris,

The ability to simply add a Monitor to all Devices is something we are looking at and something I would personally like to see added to a future version of ipMonitor. For now, the second best is as follows:

Add one Monitor to a Device
Clone it
Orphan it (see first parth of http://support.solarwinds.com/kbase/ProblemDetail.cfm?ID=787)
Clone the orphaned Monitor as many times as you have Devices.
Edit each Monitor to change its address and name.
Move each Monitor to the Device it belongs to (see second section of http://support.solarwinds.com/kbase/ProblemDetail.cfm?ID=787)
