Network Performance Alert
jeffvanderdoes
All,
Just new to SolarWinds. I'm trying to monitor our switches due to nic/sitch port problems. I've got it notifying me when I have errors (receive, transmit, discards etc) when over a certain number.
Here's the question... What is the macro code to show me what ip and/or dns/netbios name that's connected to the port? I see the code to see the switch port name, switch ip etc but not what's connected to the port.
Any insight appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Switch Port Mapper will do this. (Under Network Discovery Program Group)

I agree wholeheartedly that switch port mapper will do it... I was just wondering if there is a way on the from the network performance monitor alert to provide the information in an e-mail. It would save me additional steps of looking up each error that I receive.

Jeff,
There is not an automated way to do this. Many network engineers will place the name of the connected device in the interface description on the switch/router, or simply change the interface/port name in Network Performance Monitor to include this information.
Within the Orion version of Network Performance Monitor you can add a Custom Property field to hold this manually added information.

Unfortunately I was afraid of that... too bad. I would put names on interface description but that would be difficult to keep up on... too bad swicthes don't have dynamic description update to include (like dynamic DNS updates). Hmmm... I'll have to look into Orion or keep doing things manually.
Thanks!

jeff,
This is a good idea.
I'll bring it up in the next development meeting.
I wonder how difficult this would be to add ?
