Under Cisco tools, the config editor/viewer can capture and compare configs.

Does anyone know of a way to automate the backup process. Currently my business uses Cisco works solely for backup config feature, and it's not really with it. I'm thinking of trying to have our Unix admins write some shell scripts, but since we already have Solarwinds, it would be a great feature to have the tool automate backups. Just wondering. Thanks!

If you have the 1 year maintenace, in the Unsupported section there are vb scripts to help you automate the process for the Config Download Loader.

I downloaded the VB scripts and have setup the task scheduler on our server
to grab a copy of all our configs every 2 weeks, and archive 8 weeks of configs.
These scripts work great.

Once you have edited the scripts with your IPs and SNMP RW strings, you can run them with Windows Task Scheduler using wscript.exe ;
C:\WINNT>wscript /? for more info.

I created a batch file which archives the last three downloads, then calls the vb script.
I just run the batch file every 2 weeks with task scheduler.

When using the tool to grab configs and save them to a TFTP server, which SNMP OID's does it use? I have been trying to access the OID's that Cisco says to use with no luck, but the Solarwinds tool is able to retrieve the configs. Any information about which OID's Solarwinds is using would be appreciated.

Where exactly are these scripts?

They tftp the config from your cisco devices using the Solarwinds Cisco config upload app automatically with no user intervention required. If you have the yearly maintenance contract you can just download the scripts and modify them for your devices.

I tool have CiscoWorks and the server is always out to lunch. We are making changes to our configs and its not recoginizing them so they are backed up.

So I have the automatic script working. My question is....is there any good to to version these? Meaning the current script just overwrites the one that is there. Anyway to version these somehow? Or better yet recognize the config is different and then back it up?

Might be too much for this product..just thought I'd ask.

I have the VBS script for the config backups. Mine seems to hang up after 30 devices or so. I checked the script but I don't see where the problem is. Is there a limit of devices to that script?

NG...you talked about you use a batch file to archive the configs. If it isn't too much to ask can you shed some light on how you do that? You could post it here or just email me.

Here you go BB (I'm not a programmer, but this does work).
I created 3 subdirectories off the tftp-root folder.
Basically I'm just shuffling the data down each folder before I grab the latest configs, and overwrite the last saved configs.

rem @echo off

cd /d c:\tftp-root\rtrs\old2
copy *.CiscoConfig c:\tftp-root\rtrs\old3\*.*

cd c:\tftp-root\rtrs\old1
copy *.CiscoConfig c:\tftp-root\rtrs\old2\*.*

cd c:\tftp-root\rtrs
copy *.CiscoConfig c:\tftp-root\rtrs\old1\*.*

call Wscript //B //T:90 "C:\Utils\SW-VBS files\Download-routers-Configs.vbs"

exit

Then just schedule this batch file to run every week or two.

I'm getting errors when trying to get the script to run. What changes did you make the the script to get it to run?

I am having trouble with the transfer engine.

Script and batch file work great.

Is there a way of automatically terminating the TFTP server so you don't have to do it after each time the schedule has run?

I believe there is an option in the TFTP server settings to have it shutdown after a period of time....

You must login with your Customer ID & Password to access these components.
In addition, you must also have a valid maintenance contract with SW.

New to Vb scripts and want to be able to automate the down loading of all of my config's that I have.

Can any one post a sterile script so I can use it as an example.

There are several examples that come with the Download Config add-in:

Anybody able to get this to work with the 8.x Engineers toolset? The VB script tells me that there was a successful download, but my packet-capture tells me there was no TFTP transfer.

Did you setup the TFTP app to allow the IP's & Write access to your TFTP folder?

There's also a new tool - Cirrus Config Mangement which will do this automatically for you, based on a schedule.
