APM: Change WMI Namespace?

Hallo,

we are evaluating NPM and the APM module. I tried to monitor Microsoft Virtual Server, which provides a lot of information through WMI. So I used the tool APM Settings -> Browse a node... -> WMI Performance Counter Monitor.

It shows a lot of WMI classes and their instances. But it looks like it only shows classes from the WMI namespace root\cimv2.

The Virtual Server classes are located under root\vm\virtualserver. I can read them fine with wbemtest, but I could not figure out how to point APM to this namespace.

Can somebody open my eyes or is this not possible with APM?

Yes, at the moment it only shows classes from the root\cimv2 namespace

Virtual Server classes ... root\vm\virtualserver... how to point APM to this namespace.

You can still monitor them, but only through a Windows script. A script that returns the CpuUtilization counter of a virtual machine on a remote server should look something like this (I don't have a virtual server to test it):

strComputer = wscript.arguments(0)

strUser = wscript.arguments(1)

strPassword = wscript.arguments(2)

strVirtualMachineName = wscript.arguments(3)

Set objSWbemLocator = CreateObject("WbemScripting.SWbemLocator")

Set objWMIService = objSWbemLocator.ConnectServer (strComputer, "root\vm\virtualserver", strUser, strPassword)

Set colItems = objWMIService.ExecQuery _

("Select * from VirtualMachine where Name = strVirtualMachineName")

For Each objItem in colItems

WScript.Echo "Statistic:" & objItem.CpuUtilization

Put that into the Script Body of a Windows script template . The Script Arguments should be:

${IP} ${USER} ${PASSWORD} myVirtualMachine

myVirtualMachine is the name of the virtual machine you're trying to get data on.

thank you very much for your reply. Being able to change the WMI Namespace and using the built in WMI "Walker" would be very nice and could save a lot of time.

I will have to find some time to test your suggestion with the Script. It also looks like you are more flexible by using a Script (you can query more Values, do some calculations...). I really should try that before the Trial expires :-)

You're right about that too. Getting the value through a script lets you manipulate the data to get the result you need, formatted the way you want. For example, you could query a bunch of values, calculate their average, and then report the result rounded up to the nearest whole number.

One very simple example is converting the Windows %Disk Free Space counter to %Disk Space Used. Sample code:
