migration from ipmonitor 6 to 8.5

Question

Hello,

We are thinking of updating to IPMonitor 8.5.  What would be the proper way to move from version 6 to version 8.5?  IPMonitor v6 is on a server that will probably be retired in a couple months so IPMonitor v8.5 will be installed on a different server.

Hi Bofh1234,

Two options are available.

1- Migrating to ipMonitor 7 and then upgradig to ipMonitor 8.5

Note: You would have to contact the technical support team and aks for help in order to do this one.

This would allow you to migrate most of the Monitors, Groups and Alerts to ipMonitor 8.5.  Keep in mind that since this is a migration and that you would be going from 2 major versions behind some things may and will need migrate properly:  For example Task or Reports that where scheduled in ipMonitor 6 will not migrate.  The Database Monitors will need to be adjusted; ipMonitor 6 was only using ODBC while ipMonitor 8 uses ADO for the connection.

Migrating to ipMonitor 8 from ipMonitor 6 might be a good option if you where only using Ping Monitor and other simple Monitors such as Telnet or HTTP.  However, the best course and preferable update path would be option two:

2- Installing ipMonitor 8.5 on the system or on a new system and starting fresh.

ipMonitor 8.5 comes with multiple options to allow you to quickly get up and monitoring.  I would use the Network scan to scan my network and create the Monitors.  The Network scan will find the systems and devices on your network and provide (suggest) a list of Monitors that could be used for the monitoring.  So in a matter minutes, you would have recreated almost all of the Monitors needed plus found new items that might be worth while monitoring.  Doing so would also allow you to take adavantage of all of the new Monitors that where added to ipMonitor 8 that where not available in ipMonitor 6, for example:  Bandwidth, CPU and Memory Monitors.

Once done, you can compare with ipMonitor 6 and add the Monitors that are missing and recreate the Alerts as needed.  The plus side is that it will allow you to do a clean up on the monitoring and alerting.

In the end the best thing to do would be to contact the support team and describe your monitoring setup.  They will be able to recommend the best way to proceed; Migrate or start fresh.
