Greetings fellow Thwackers!
I've got an odd question considering how in depth that we've used Orion thus far. Regardless, we'll dive right in.
We have a very big environment monitored by a pair of Orion NPM Servers (one Primary & one Additional Poller) polling a total of 6566 elements. We've never really setup the VNQM portion properly. We do it some times and rip the stuff back out after a while. The Solarwinds Suite is more "owned" by the networking team, and only a few of us (not me) have a deep understanding of the Voice/IPT elements. I want to set it up "right" this time. Here's our situation:
Our Data Centers (in regards to Call Managers) are built like this:
Core Switch --> Edge Switch --> Virtual Switch --> Call Managers
All of our offices are configured to the WAN like this:
Core Switch --> WAN Router 1 / Outside Interface --> MPLS Cloud (Provider 1)
--> WAN Router 2 / Outside Interface --> MPLS Cloud (Provider 2)
We are also migrating to SIP as a voice solution, so we have to deal with those features as well.
Some offices still have the old PRI-based phone systems, so they are configured like this:
Core Switch --> IPT Router / Outside PRI 1 --> Voice Provider
/ Outside PRI 2 --> Voice Provider
... ...
/ Outside PRI X --> Voice Provider
I have another monkey wrench to throw in any answers, but my main questions are:
- What devices do we select within the Infrastructure Selection Screen?
- I know that since ALL traffic goes through the Core Switches, we'll want them in there, but what about the WAN Routers?
- Do we also need to include the interfaces?
- How may devices are too many devices?
- Why is the list sorted so oddly? (this last one is just for me).
Thanks,

Orion Core 2012.1.1
SAM 5.2.0
IPAM 3.0
NCM 7.0.2
NPM 10.3.1
NTA 3.10.0
UDT 2.5.0
IVIM 1.4.0
VNQM 4.0
P.S. - If you want to know about the monkey wrench, we are also running TelePresence in dozens of sites and that traffic is even MORE important than the baseline Voice traffic.
