execute linux shell script as alert action

Hello All,

I have setup a http monitor component in one of my application monitor.

I want to execute a linux shell script when the http monitor is down or not responding.

the script will kill a java process and restart it by executing another script within itself.

Also, since i have configured a common alert for different http monitors(viz. diff hosts) how can i make sure the script is executed on the correct host.

The first thing you'll want to do is to have an advanced alert that triggers when your HTTP monitor is down or not responding (unknown). The alert action that executes an external executable is your best bet. The challenge now is writing an executable/script that can a) accept the name of the intended host & process as command line arguments, b) connect to the remote machine, and c) restart the process.

I imagine that the command like look like: c:\scripts\restartprocess.pl ${Node.IP_Address} processname

That solves the issue of making sure your alert action is dynamic, as well - the IP address for the alerting node will be passed in the arguments.

I already have an advanced alert which alerts when http monitor is down or unknown.

This is the script which i want to execute on remote linux host

*********************************************************

#!/bin/bash

#kill the java process running under the gateway user

/bin/kill -9 `ps -U gateway | grep java | awk '{print $1}'`

#restart the java process

/bin/sh runbackground.sh

I am no good at perl. There are several http monitors for different hosts. If i have to connect to remote machine i will have to hardcode the credentials.

There is a concept of ssh key pairs in unix. I don't know if that can be done on windows box where solarwinds is installed.

Can you help me with a perl script?

One more option that came to my mind is to install cygwin on solarwinds server, and execute a shell script which will connect to remote linux hosts and execute another shell script on them. How does this sound ???

I wish there was a option to execute shell script in alert trigger actions.

I don't have a script like the one you're talking about unfortunately. The cygwin idea is interesting. If you had a shell, how would you run the script remotely?

there are certain commands like remsh and rsh which can execute commands remotely on linux servers.
