Deleting configuration from the node detail page errors

I ran into this problem today. I tried to delete a configuration file using the delete config button on the node details page/tab for a device and ended up with an error.

Cirrus.ConfigArchive.DeleteConfigs failed. Check fault information, System.ArgumentException --> username

The configuration file is deleted, and cannot be seen on the configs page, yet the error persists when I try to do other device configuration.

Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix this?

I am a little confused as to why this clean install is having so much problems.

By seeing System.ArgumentException it makes me think potentially it's on the Windows OS that your Orion platform is running on. Is there a service account associated with the Orion platform services or does it run as system? Are GPOs being applied to the server? Is there a security principal listed under the config file storage location on the server?

Just to clarify, you said you deleted the config: is it still in the config directory in Windows? If not, maybe there is an account limitation on your SolarWinds server for your user account/group? Another possibility is the way the account was configured in SQL, although I would assume there would be a SqlClient reference in the error.

I know working with Tech Support that there were some permission, HBSS and GPO issues. We cleared the GPO issues and then took the server out from HBSS blocking any processes, writes, etc. Orion does not work with any platform services so it probably is running through

When I mentioned the Orion platform services, I was referring to the services the "orion platform" runs in the Windows OS to function. These are your OrionModuleEngine, SolarWindsAlertingEngine, SolarWindsTrapService, etc. Was the Tech Support from SolarWinds are within your company/organization? Have you looked into SQL?

Continuing on... I will have to check to see if platform services are running as system.

If I do a refresh then it shows the file was deleted on the web console. The configuration is still in the Config-Archive folder in Windows.

The SQL client was configured when SolarWinds Configuration Wizard built the account. I did that after I uninstalled NCM and reinstalled it.

Everything else works fine.

That seems to me like the issue is with the Windows account that SolarWinds is trying to use to delete the config file. The entry was removed from the SQL database, but the file was unable to be deleted. Check the security properties for that folder. There is likely a security principal that has permission to read/write/modify but not delete. Being that this is a clean install of SolarWinds, I would also assume there may be a "blank" SID showing under the security settings. If this config was not saved by this new installation of SolarWinds, then there is likely a missing "Delete" NTFS permission that is preventing the deletion of the config.

If this config has been created by this new install of NCM, I would again, dig through the principals listed under the folder Security and figure out which security principal does not have Delete permissions, and then change it.
