Help with group application alerting.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for instructions on how to create a trigger alert for a group of Citrix servers?

I want to monitor about 5 applications (for example “Citrix XenApp 5.0 Core WMI counters, Citrix XenApp 5.0 ICA Session WMI counters, etc.) on 10 Citrix servers (node group name = Citrix) and alert, via email notification, when an application on any one of these servers fails.

I’m familiar with Alert Manager…but I need help in programming the correct trigger conditions…is there any kind of an example of this listed online that I can use for reference?

- I believe that the type of property to monitor needs to be APM: Application and that the following attributes must be true:

Trigger Alert when all of the following apply:

1. 1. Group name is equal to Citrix Servers (this is a group of nodes that I have created)

2. 2. Application Name is equal to Citrix XenApp5.0 Core WMI counters (I am guessing that I would need an entry for each application I’m looking to monitor)

3. 3. Application Status is equal to down.

Does this seem correct?

Advanced alert manager does this by using multiple condition groups. Below is a quick example. Remember when to use the [all, any, none, not all] correctly. And also make sure your nesting is alligned correctly.

Use one condition group to match the servers and the other to match the applications. Let me know if you need any more assistance.

If either nyctx01 or nyctx02 have any of the listed applications change state = down, will this generate an alert?

Nice job Steve,

This looks like it should work. All 3 conditions will have to be true, and you have nested them correctly. This will only be active for servers nyctx01 and nyctx02. Also, remember these alerts will get suppressed automatically if the server goes down. This is a nice built in feature!

I don't think the node status is required since it will suppress the alerts if the node is down. The status of the applications goes into an "unknown" state and therefore won't trigger the "down" trigger condition.

Thanks Zak....I'll remove the "Node Status is not equal to Down" entry and add the rest of the servers.
