Using NCM Policy Rules for Remediation

For some years we have had written a number of Orion NCM Policy Reports. These are used to check that parts of the configuration of various nodes or devices are correct. If the configuration is not, the report highlights the nodes that are not correct. This is useful, but we are now looking at going a step further and looking at using remediation scripts for each of the rules. This should allow NCM to resolve any configuration issues itself.

I have not been able to find any information on how to get the remediation scripts to run in NCM.

I have created a rule that includes a remediation script. I have created a report that selects nodes that do not violate the rule and nodes that do violate the rule. However when the report is run the remediation script does not get run for the nodes that do violate the rule.

What am I missing here? Is there something else that I am missing here that ensures that the remediation script runs?

If anyone out there has any ideas I would really appreciate any information on how people actually use NCM's remediation scripts.

Well, we use NCM7.1.1 and it can be reached from web interface by clicking the warning icon on the report.

Did you try opening violation details on the report and select "execute remediation script on this/all Node"?

I must be missing somthing fundamental here. When I manually execute a report from the Policy Reporter or the report is run by a job, I don't see anything that indicates that I can execute the remediation script. Is this something that was part of the initial NCM configuration wizard, or is there something else that needs to be set up so that the remediation scripts can be run?

I recommend moving to the latest version of NCM. There have been significant changes from 7.0.2 to 7.1.1.

Ah!! The web interface has hyperlinks. Why didn't I think of that? There was I thinking they were just icons with no use. I can now sleep at night.

After your hint, I can confirm that in NCM 7.0.2 the NCM web page does the same behaviour you describe in NCM 7.1.1. In the GUI on the NCM server for 7.0.2 the violationicons do not appear to do anything if you just single click on them. You need to double click on the icon to get a 'Policy Rule Violation Details...' dialog to be displayed. This is similar to the web page that is displayed when yoo single click on the violation icon in the web interface.

Thanks for your help. If only the supplied documentation was a little clearer and complete on the use of the remediation scripts.
