I need help configuring Alerts for my APM Component Monitor. Please!

I have a customized vb script (started with the Orion template) that monitors specific things in the Windows EventLog. We have it written and configured so that our message from the script shows up in the Orion GUI for the Component monitor, but now we want that message text to be passed into an email that is sent from an alert.

We've tried several of the standard variables to capture the message, but we can't figure out how to get the message that we've written to the GUI.

I'm sure someone must have done this before.. can you help us please?

In addition to passing the message contents via the alert action, you might also take a look at the SQL report in content exchange (link below) that will pull message content information from the component details resource in a report format. You can set a filter so it's excluding apps that are not specific to the Win Event Log monitors.

Assuming the message appears in the popup when you hover over the info box, to include this in an alert, use the ${StatusOrErrorDescription} variable. Hope this helps.

Thanks. This is what we found. We had selected the wrong alert object (Application instead of Component) in the GUI, and so we didn't find this variable.

The Status or Error Description is limited to 256 characters, isn't it?

It's in fact 255 characters. You should limit your message from script to this length. It won't be stored full into database if it is longer.
