Custom charts via highcharts.

Starting work on some 'stripped down' versions of charts using highcharts.

Won't help anyone directly, but the code may give someone else a clue in future endeavors.

Code is all in a resource file .ascx, uses sql connection (from wluthers mod here: Custom SQL Dynamic Graphing Resource ).

Pushes that data to json, then reads it via javascript which can generate the highchart.

This chart is: Current CPU usage (one bar per node) for all windows VMs.

if you hover over a column, it tells you which node it refers to. Clicking on the column takes you to the node details view for that node.

This chart: Windows nodes, disk space free. Each little tiny bar represents 1 disk. Again, click on the bar to go to 'node details' for that node.

The scale here is logarithmic, due to having free disk space ranging from 0 GB to 10,000 GB.

Last and least, a 24-hour tab from 'node details' with resource usage over last 24 hours for the selected node. 'Disk usage' shows all disks for the node on a single chart.

c.gura is the real deal, I think. Sounds like he's written a parallel system in Perl that pulls the SQL data out of Solarwinds then graphs it via Highcharts. I'm just a hacky sysadmin moving pieces around in solarwinds.

Not sure what to tackle next: 1) Set up a 'repeater' like you did, just using more compact charts. 2) Add some control capability to specify chart data from the solarwinds UI. I'm not sure this one is possible.

Appreciate the feedback! Work intrudes a bit, but I'll keep at it.

First draft, so still rough. This chart is showing cpu activity for windows boxes over the last 24 hours.

140 or so servers and 24 hours for data, so large but by no means huge for data wrangling.

Not sure the server graphs are far enough apart, or possibly too small, etc.

I redacted servernames to put in 'servernamehere', but it's currently sorted by servername and would have server names.

So, it simply builds a new/separate graph for each result of the query in the file?

Precisely. Does some manipulation to deal with the time format, and the query results are sorted by server, then by time to keep things in order, but yeah, that's all there is to it.

This specific one is for CPU, but memory, and bandwidth for a single interface should be very similar. Doing one for all disks or interfaces on a server would take a bit more work, as there's another layer of sorting to process.

It kinda builds up something very similar. Where you can compare multiple statistics in the same timeframe for root cause determination.

c.gura Yup, I love that new PerfStack tool. I had been playing around with it for the past few weeks, and it is easily the best new tool I have seen in a while... I think once they break it down into an actual resource, or build resources on that framework, it will work best. That is definitely the closest thing I have seen them come up with so far. However, jnathlich12, has worked up a nice looking solution that is 100% what I need for my NOC screens. That row by row graphing, automatically adding a new graph based on custom property, will literally save me days of work, AND it will look nice too. No more large, squared, boxy looking graphs that waste so much screen real estate.

I will be nice when they have some sort of template option for PerfStack, allowing you to just build the types of views you want to see, and then dump a bunch of elements on it in bulk, and fill it out. Just think, if we were able to define specific criteria for each of those lines/boxes on the PS layout, something similar to the filters. Each box/graph on the PS page having its own set of criteria. Then you wouldn't even have to drop anything in there at all, it would just build out the page automatically.

I'm just excited they have release such an amazing tool, FOR FREE!! It is so powerful already, I can't wait until they build upon it.

wluther you really should check out the SolarWinds Lab. patrick.hubbard shows how to create a PerfStack view dynamically. He does this in the alert trigger action to build a link to the exact type of perfstack view you want. This could easily be adapted to create a link on the Node page or other page to take you to the view you want. Look starting at 24:00 into the video.

The first two charts are really interesting. They provide a lot of data in a small amount of space, and really simple drill down for more info on a data point. Nice work.

Thanks! Data dense diagrams are critical for some sysadmin/enterprise situations. NPM is geared toward big friendly charts out of the box, but can definitely play in the data-dense space with a little modification. This would increase the draw for people coming out of a MRTG/Cacti like environment.
