Advanced alerting question regarding disk space

Hi, we have a 'master' disk space alert which covers most of our servers.

However we have a few where the disk space is 'used' up until say 97$ i.e. a backup 2 disk folder.

I have excluded the backup server from the master alert & created new alerts for this server, based on the amount of drives it has (this may well be ineffecient / confusing things, so please suggest an alertanative if needs be?).

Basically, my alert is as follows;

Volume Type is equal to fixed disk

volume percentage is greater than or equal to 97

node name is equal to BACKUPSEVER

full name is equal to BACKUPSERVER f:\ label b2d #1 b6fc3a0b

I have created 4 of these rules for each drive (is this necessary?).

The reset condition is

volume type is equal to fixed disk

volume percentage available is great than or equal to 4

nothing in alert suppression

i've tested the alert using the advanced alert manager & the test works, I get an email saying the disk is low on space.

my problem is now that when I manage the advanced alerts using the main solarwinds page, the alert is enabled, it was polled recently but it has never 'errored' I assume meaning triggered the alert.

I've purposly copied some 4GB iso files onto the drive & its just not updating.

sorry for waffling, but I'm not sure what else to do?

I think there is a better way to accomplish what you are trying to do.

I have two volume alerts, one is called "Default Volume Alert" and the other is called "Custom Volume Alert". I also have a Custom Volume Property called "Utilization Threshold". If the value in the Utilization Threshold custom property is empty then my Default Volume Alert will trip when the volume hits 90%. If I put a value in the Utilization Threshold field then the Custom Volume Alert will trip when the volume hits what ever value is in the custom property. The alerts are as follows...

Default Volume Alert

Volume Type is equal to Fixed Disk

Volume Percent Used is greater than or equal to 90

Utilization Threshold is empty

Custom Volume Alert

Volume Type is equal to Fixed Disk

field Volume Percent Used is greater than or equal to field Utilization Threshold

Utilization Threshold is not empty

Brilliant solution ! I especially like the bit about checking for the empty threshold value. That'll avoid the hassle of having to have a threshold for every volume where the generic alert definition would work just fine. - make sure you mark his response as the answer if that works for you.

Byron - are the alerts you have the ONLY two for disk space alerting?

I dont suppose you could post a screen shot could you? Feel free to blank out names if needs be!

I now know why its not sending me alerts too ,as i've exlcuded it in our master disk space alert. If I take it out, my custom alerts dont seem to work (i.e. the 'master' alert seems to take over at all times??)

The alerts are exactly as I have stated them above. Blow are screenshots, I had to clean them up because I have other criteria specified in our actual alerts that are specific for our environment.

Please forgive my ignorance, but Utilization Threshold, do I need to define this anywhere?

If you look up at my original response I noted that I created a Custom Volume Property called Utilization Threshold. By doing this I am able to use just these two alerts to cover any possible needs with regard to volume utilization alerting.

Unfortunately I can't take complete credit for that. I read about that idea in a much older post where somebody else very elegantly documented the solution.

This thread has a nifty (if I do say so myself) way that you can set per-item (CPU, RAM, disk, interface, etc) thresholds and manage them from a single alert.
