What's in the network?
kahann
Hi,
I am looking for a tool that can tell me 'What's in the network?'. Basically, I would like to know if my WAN utilization is 90% (from MRTG), I want to know what are the apps/protocol that use the 90%. Is it HTTP (people surfing too much the web)? Is it kaaza? etc.
Once apps/protocol identified, I would like to know WHO? What is the source and destination IP for the HTTP or kaaza.
Can SolarWinds toolset help me in that?

SolarWinds reads most of it's information from the network via SNMP, similarly to MRTG. While SolarWinds beats MRTG hands down, it does not perform protocol analyzation. Solar Winds does have a port scanner, but you really need to use something like Ethereal www.ethereal.com on a laptop to find out what the actual traffic is.
