error on WMI counters on Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers

Hi all,

I've just setup an eval of Solarwinds APM to monitor our Exchange Server 2007 org and have noticed that certain WMI counters return the below error:

Unexpected error occurred. Unexpected result code was returned - 0xC0000BC6.

I've hopefully added screengrabs of the counters that display this.

Also some other counters return the error: Bad input parameter. The supplied Category is invalid

The error 'Bad input parameter. The supplied Category is invalid' most likely represents missing performance counter. The other error code 0xc000BC6 means invalid data. I'm not sure about this one, it can represent missing counter as well. First of all, I recommend to use perfom.exe and check if the erroneous performance counters exist on the Exchange server. If not, you should remove them from application.

Ok, What about possibly adding them. I would like to monitor my server and learn how to make these counters work, not just ignore them.

First ensure that these counters in fact exist using Perfmon. It may be that you have a specific instance name that must be specified in the component monitors for these to be correctly monitored. Open Perfmon.exe on the APM server and connect to the remote computer. Locate the Category from the APM component monitor that's down in perfmon, then the counter, and it's instance.

Exchange 2007 Mailbox Role Counters (Advanced)

If the category, instance, or counter don't exist on this server it may not be running the Exchange Mailbox role at all. It may be a CAS, Edge or Hub server. Another possibility could be that you need to rebuild the Windows Performance Counters by running "lodctr /R" from the command line of the Exchange server being monitored.

Lastly, I noticed that you're running the older "Exchange 2010 Mailbox Role Performance Counters" template. This template has since been updated/replaced. You'll find the latest Exchange templates included in APM 4.2, as well as in the Content Exchange Zone of Thwack.com.
