My suggestion: Email round-trip monitoring is the best solution for prevention of email outage. Applying the POP3/IMAP email round trip template is to test the ability of the SMTP server to receive and distribute email, and the ability of users to retrieve messages from POP3-enabled email clients. I have the template to monitor this process; all I have to do is to enable this process on the SMTP server. Is there a server(s) to test with? The next step is configuring this alert. Mitch is this the direction we want to go?
Server Engineer response: I'm not sure how we'll get this to monitor email in and out of Baylor from your description below. Unless we can get the Solarwinds server to inject mail into both outer MX server interfaces our testing will be incomplete. And that would only test email delivery from out to in. We also need to test from Exchange/mailrelay out to public.
Also, how would I setup this alert?
