Questions on alerting

1) If we are rebooting an exchange server and we set it to unmanaged will it alert after the unmanaged period expires?

If the triggers are to alert when a server goes offline for any reason, emails are sent to the concerned groups, and when the event clears emails are sent. If this is a planned outage we do not want to get alerts, so we unmanage the node and we get no alerts, however about 12 hours later (when the windows admin set the unmanage time to expire) we got condition clear alerts. If I were to a) set nodes to an unmanaged period that over laps the known downtime and set an alert suppression condition to suppress alerts when a node is unmanaged will all alerts be suppressed when the window expires?

2) Can I do a bulk unmanage on a logical group from the webui (is it constrained by anythingif I can)?

3) I can't think of a 3 at the moment

Hi Pimp_vader.

1. i have not tested it, but it is logical that your solution should work.

2. You can bulk manage items by group

a. from the Home screen, go to the "Manage Nodes" button and select it.

b. once you are in the Manage Nodes screen. on this screen you can group them and select them in bulk once they are grouped.

c. once you select them, you can select to "Unmanage" them and set the time period for all of them.

I use custom properties to create my "group by:" categories.

I'm new to Orion NPM and alerts so I may be supplying incorrect information. I think if you set alert suppression to when unmanaged, any node that's set for unmanaged would suppress all other nodes. So if server A is set for unmanaged but server B went into alarm, I think suppression would be on and you would not get the alert from server B. Can someone confirm?

This isn't alert suppression- this is simply unmanaging the nodes so that SW does not poll it (and thus can't get any status regarding if a node went down or not).

That said, concerning the original question -

1) Note that "offline for any reason" is not as descriptive as you might think. Does that alert whenever the node status is Down OR whenever the node status is NOT Up? There are other statuses such as when it is Warning (~1 minute interval following when it failed a ping) or when it is Unavailable (from dependencies) etc. If it does include "everything but Up" note that Unmanaged is a Status type, and alerts will get fired from when it changes from up to unmanaged.

2) There is an unmanage utility/application on the SW server (unmanage sheduling utility), where you can schedule groups of nodes to be unmanaged for set amounts of times.
