Keeping compressed data for x days

Hello,

I am currently setting up NPM and NTA. I was wondering how long I can keep compressed netflow data. The setting under Settings -> NTA Settings -> Database settings and "Keep compressed data for X days".

What is generally good? I really want to keep the netflow data for as long as possible without causing the database to grow too large or to have to much of a negative impact on the Solarwinds solution.

Running NTA 3.7

Any ideas?

Hello,

from NTA point of view:

Generally good for "Keep compressed data for X days" is to set depth which you require for your charts. So when you satisfied with last 2 weeks, set this value to 14 days and you improve performance of your system. If you require more than default 30 days for your charts, set more - but be careful here - bigger depth of your data will increase size of your database and also decrease performance of NTA - mainly DB maintenance and showing charts for period longer than 3 days. It's not recommended to set this value to more than you really need.

Does Enterprise Operations Console have any way of archieving the netflow data? As I have understood netflow data is not to be kept for too long, but is it possible to keep the data for say 3-6-12 months without too much of a decrease in performance and increase in database size?

What would you recommend as a max value?

What the Orion products need is a data warehouse process that generates all the graphs and charts you want on a daily basis at maximum granularity and then store those charts as static content with a portal to the content all nice and intuitively organized.

And this function is not implemented or included in any of these applications now? So basically it is not possible?

It's possible to use Report Scheduler to schedule the printing of views. It should be possible to use a "print-to-file" driver to create an archive.
