Virtualisation - Hyper-V polling using SNMP? Or must it be WMI at the expense of Dell Disk Information

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to Solarwinds and would like to expand our Hyper-V virtualisation monitoring. However, I can see that our Hyper-V Virtualisation page is thread bare with only two servers listed and yet I can tell you that we have about 200 Hyper-V hosts.

Doing some preliminary checks and it looks like the Machine Type is the differentiating factor with some host being correctly identified as Hyper-V servers.

From what I can see, Hyper-V must be selected under the resources page for a given node but it appears that this can only be achieved through WMI polling. Can someone please confirm this to be the case?

This leads me onto the second part of this discussion, most of our Servers are Dell and in order to get complete disk information these physical servers must be polled by SNMP. So it would appear that it is impossible to monitor a Dell Server Environment whilst obtaining both complete physical disk information and also making the environment Hyper-V aware?

Any advice, guidance or ideas appreciated.

We use WMI polling to gain access to Hyper-V specific data, so if you're looking for Hyper-V specific polling then please utilize WMI polling. It's been a while but if i recall correctly there was a way in the past where you could set up a UNDP on a node using SNMP, then cut the node over to WMI and the UNDP would still be able to collect SNMP data for you. This might be a workaround for your situation where you can use WMI for the bulk of the polling and still grab the disk data in SNMP

Not currently but that's a feature request that my colleagues aLTeReGo and jvb are tracking. What is your use case that you're trying to monitor with both protocols?

serena will the hardware monitoring work with the credentials or any agent is required on the Hyper-V hosts? If you can provide some links which explains overall detail then it would help a lot..

Hardware health monitoring data all comes from the vcenter itself. Vcenter gets it from the host via CIM protocol but you shouldn't need to do anything extra from the Orion side. As long as Orion can tell the host is a child of whatever vcenter it will display the data.

As far as documentation the best I can find is this one Success Center

Errrr just realized this is a hyper v thread.

In which case it falls under the requirements for monitoring hardware health on any other windows server. Dell/IBM/HP all work if you have the appropriate agent from those vendors installed on the server.
