Using Groups, Dependencies, and Alert Suppression in Enterprise Environment

Hi,

We're on 10.1. I have read the Word doc and viewed posts for building dependencies and alert rules. They seem geared towards networks with a handful of sites. We have an enterprise with 130 sites/offices. Before we start building dynamic groups and dependencies for each site, then creating 130 custom alert suppression rules, I thought it would be wise to see if anyone has tried alert suppression in a larger enterprise?

First part - yes you will have to create one for each site. We realize we need to make this easier/better going forward. We have an enhancement to make recommendations based on network topology, which would help.

QQ though, why do you need 130 custom alert suppression rules?

Hi Brandon,

I automatically assumed that suppression criteria for all sites in one rule or a few rules would be too large, if it could even be constructed. Wrong assumption?

Not at all. You can use the out of the box alert we ship with to tell you if a node is down.

Once the dependencies are setup, before we fire alerts, we check the dependencies and if one exists, we put the children into an unreachable status so it does not match the node is down alert rule

Hi Brandon,

I haven't seen your posts specifically, just posts from others where you have commented. I'm looking for them now but not seeing them easily. If you have URL's handy that would be great.

I was hoping we could use the node down alert rule that comes with the product--that's what we're using now with the custom code I was telling you about. I should have tried building suppression criteria before posting, and appreciate not being flogged!
