Can anyone tell me how I can calculate what the overhead for Kiwi writing logs to a disk might be? I have other devices writing to the same disk and do not want to cause a bottle neck.

This is hard to say. How many syslogs are you expecting per hour?
If you are using HP servers, I believe you have the capability to monitor the disk's health like IO. If not, you might wanted to consider Solarwinds Orion SAM (www.solarwinds.com/server-application-monitor.aspx) or STM (www.solarwinds.com/storage-manager.aspx)
