ICMP or SNMP for IPAM network scan ?!

Hi All,

I have recently started using IP Address Management (IPAM).

I believe IPAM uses two protocols for scanning the network 1) ICMP and 2) SNMP.

ICMP being the default scan, it is Solarwinds recommendation. But the ICMP pings produces a lot of traffic in the network deep down. When coming to SNMP, this is used by NPM monitors the network health which I believe is also ideal for IPAM as well.

Can you please give me your opinions on which is the ideal protocol for Scanning the network IP addresses in IPAM ?
