I am looking for a way to map files and folders on our servers, and if possible to map the permissions to those files and folders as well. We have several servers with millions of files and folders on them which have been in place for years. The current configuration and the permissions for it are not mapped in any easily usable way. It was suggested by one of our users that we 'put a form in place to document and track system permission changes'. However, coming into the picture well after this was all setup I do not see an easy way to map it all and improve control of the permissions which are applied to the various files and folders in order to setup anything to track this all better than what we are currently doing.
Most of the applications I have looked into do not map anything beyond the initial folder, so sub-folders are excluded and thus it would take a very significant amount of time to go through all the various folders and sub folders to map them all including the permissions for them. I looked into the Permissions Analyzer for Active Directory but it only does the single folder. Someone suggested using the Server Application Monitor or the Network Topology Mapper but neither is setup to actually map files and folders on a server. Any ideas on how to easily map all files/folders on a server along with the permissions applied to those folders?
