Network Sonar

I used Network Sonar to scan our Network and was curious about the results. On the results of the scan under "Discovered Machine Types", I noticed 1000 devices listed as "UNKNOWN" and 2 devices listed as Windows XP Workstation. MANY of the "UNKNOWN's" would be Windows 2000/XP Workstations. It showed 1 2003 server, there should be more then that.
Why the discrepancy?
Thanks
Tony

Network Sonar can only identify a device if it is able to poll the device with SNMP.
Otherwise it can only "see" the device on your network using ICMP. but cannot report any details.
Windows SNMP used to be wide open using the default 'public' community string, but since XP & Win2k3, it has been locked down. You will have to specifically allow all your PC's to be polled by the Network Sonar PC with SNMP in order to get the PC's details.
