Find all unused ports on a large Cisco Network...

I'm trying to find a way to find all unused or inactive LAN ports on a large Cisco Network. Could I use Solarwinds to perform such a task?

Yes, the switch port mapper included with the Engineers Edition has a field which gives the time & date of the last traffic seen on the port.
We export ours to a web page, which allows anyone in our group to view & download the data to Excel.

Hi...

I face the same problem as well. I used Port Mapper for this issue and it did give me the last actvity time of connected devices only, but i needed the last activity of all ports including notconnected and shutdown, so that I wont shut down someone who is on vacation.

I found Last Change Status to be useful, it gives an indication when the port was up or down. But I couldnt get to display Administratively shut down ports.

Have you tried: Show Interface Status & Show Interface Status on the switch )assuming you are running native - IOS)?

If you can find the MIB which shows these values, you can use the Solarwinds Toolset - Excel add-in to grab this from all your switches & publish into a spreadsheet.

The MIB for Interface status is: "1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.8"

For last change time, the MIB is: "1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.9" measured as timeticks (100th of a second) since sysup. To calculate the time since last used, we need to subtract it from sysup time ("1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0") and divide by 8640000 to measure in days.

@Network_Guru: Can you please explain which Tool can help me to grab this from all switches? We have the Solarwinds Engineer's Toolset but cannot figure out which one will help me capture MIB values on multiple switches.

Use the Switch Port Mapper gadget in the Workspace Studio and go into settings to make sure you show columns dealing with interface status and times of last changes.

Thanks! I thought there is some tool in Engineer's toolset to bulk export certain MIB tables to Excel or other formats for analysis and reporting.
