Add a SQL Express DB & alert from it...

Hi,

I've just had my IT manager ask me whether, with NPM, we can get it to hook into an additional SQL Express Database (alongside NetPerfMon) & using the information that gets written there, somehow lever NPM to report from this & be able to trigger alerts etc...

I'm doubtful this is possible, however, I've been surprised in the past...

In slightly more detail, we will be getting access to a dashboard which draws from the mentioned SQL Express DB & displays this info - ok, that's great, but not very pro-active... hence the idea that we could instead just "plug" this into NPM & do what's needed from there in terms of thresholds/triggers/alerts

Now that I think about & seeing this written down, I'm highly doubtful it'll be possible unless formatting/tables etc are relevant & so on, again though, don't mind being proven wrong I'm no DBA by any stretch of the imagination..

If more info would be useful or I'm just not being clear, please let me know

The SQL Server User Experience Monitor component monitor in SAM is probably exactly what you are looking for from an alerting perspective:

Hi Rob, thanks for your reply, but it's not an additional monitor I want to put in place per se.. I want to be able to use the SQL express db the same way I use the NetPerfMon db in so much as NPM uses the info gathered & can perform actions from there.. like I say, doubtful that its possible (without a massive amount of work)

Apologies, I'm not certain what we are trying to do. Are you looking to populate this second DB with NPM table data?

Essentially, we've been 'given' another DB & been told "here, see if you can use this the same way you use the NetPerfMon DB?"

So, Orion would be looking at both of these & then be able to perform all the actions/functions etc based off what get's written there.. Like I said, I think without a massive amount of work, then it wouldn't be possible..
