I wouldn't say that I've seen a performance increase, but I have seen the availability benefits. We had a site run for over two weeks while Centurylink spent their time trying to tell us us our gear was broken. The issue suddenly resolved itself after we threatened to cancel our circuit because of how well SD-WAN was performing over our cable internet connection.

There is significant decrease in performance if you run over LTE, but the site would still function!

So that really depends on what performance increase you are looking for.

Being able to use my internet connections with my MPLS circuits does increase application, file replication and over all performance as I now have multiple paths and a huge bump in the available bandwidth at at time. In addition any SD-WAN solution should be doing jitter, latency and MOS monitoring and depending on our application profile be able to send the data down the correct connection.
If you are looking at using SD-WAN only to increase the performance on any individual connection you might see some increase, I have, in the fact that the solutions should be able to "fill" the connections appropriately. Remember you have not changed the circuit at all with bandwidth or reduced latency. This is a much smaller impact than using multiple connections at once.
Finally, depending on your solution there might be compression options. I know with SilverPeak they have an offering called "Boost". This is compression and puts less data on the connections through the WAN interfaces than what is being sent to device on the LAN interface.

Putting all of these 3 points together I have seen a 10x increase in the amount of bandwidth available to my applications and file replications with our SilverPeak solution. So the traffic going quicker through the connections, have decreased the latency of each packet and we have seen a performance boost in our EF and AF41 dscp marked packets across the WAN.

I am not sure of performance gains but the cost savings alone is enough to justify. You can move away from legacy/expensive MPLS and put in redundant fiber/cable connections and never miss a beat. We have 15 sites all running on Meraki's SD-WAN and we have very little issue, circuits go offline but the redundant is always there to take over.
