Grouping nodes for reporting purposes

I'm new to solarwinds products so have a question best practices to assist in reporting. I'm SQL Server DBA and like to group VM's running SQL server into different 'buckets' such as prod/dev, etc. and be able run a report that shows detail for only servers tagged as either prod/dev.

Like to find out the best method for doing this and if it should be some type of custom attribute for this purpose or if there is another way I can group these servers in the categories I want to report on.
