I am trying to setup monitoring of VMware datastores in Solar Winds Orion NPM but its grey'd out. Where in the console can I enable this?
NPM does not collect datastore information, you will need VMAN to get that information.
Is that typically a separate purchase? I am new to SolarWinds so please talk to me like I ma a noob because I truly am
Yes, Virtualization Manager (VMAN) is a separate purchase. The view you're looking at is called AppStack, which is visual end to end mapping of dependencies from the application to the back end storage array, put together from data from all the following SolarWinds modules
Server & Application Monitor (SAM)
Virtualization Manager (VMAN)
Storage Resource Monitor (SRM)
Web Performance Monitor (WPM)
Database Performance Analyzer (DPA)
The following link breaks down which modules contribute to each section of the AppStack view. As you will find out some modules overlap in their contribution such as VMAN and SAM will both populate the Hosts, Virtual Clusters, Virtual DataCenters, & Virtual Centers but only VMAN will populate the datastore section.
