How to be alerted when email is down?

Question

A couple of questions..  How best to test monitor that mail is in fact flowing from inside to out and outside in?

If there is a problem with mail - how can you send an SMS message to that effect?  Thanks.

An APM monitor and SMS alerting mechanism will work here:

For example, IMAP4 User Experience Monitor
