Advanced Alert based on Custom Poller

I created a custom poller to poll for the number of active VPN tunnels on a Cisco ASA. I want to create an alert that emails me when the number of active tunnels either falls below "x" or goes above "x" (someone creates a new tunnel and doesn't update the alert). I can't figure out how to pull the current number of active tunnels from the poller. Can anyone help me with this?
