How to purge SQL database historical data

Hi Bnpnoc,

You could reset you data retention settings (http://<hostname>/Orion/Admin/PollingSettings.aspx) to 0 days and then run the DB maintenance tool on the Orion server ( RDP to your server and run <drive>:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Database-Maint.exe).

Once purged, reset the data retention back to original values.

Alternately you could re-run the configuration wizard and create a new database instance, but this would be like starting again with a totally empty database.

If you are trying to reduce storage requirements, here's what I'd recommend.

Determine the number of detail days you want to keep history for. This will be the number of days you will have to ability to drill into the second by second activity.

Navigate to options -> Administration (Tab) -> Advanced Options -> DB Instance Options

Select the database you want to adjust, scroll down to CLEAN_DAYS_OF_DETAIL option and adjust to the number you had determined (default is 30 days).

The cleaner should run overnight, so tomorrow, your detail data will removed. (Make sure DPA stays up and active overnight and can connect to its repository)

Oh, are you talking about the Orion repository or DPA? Please clarify as my response was specific for DPA.

You can also CLEAN_DAYS_OF_TREND. By default DPA keeps 5 years of trend data (1,825 days). That's great for your most critical servers, but maybe you don't need that much data for staging or dev servers or servers where you aren't likely to do extensive research into the past. Save some space if you've been tracking trend data for years by setting the value to 365 for one year or 750 or whatever. The setting is found in the same area as the CLEAN_DAYS_OF_DETAIL.

Keep in mind that 90% of the storage consumption results from the detail data.

The 5 year data is at a daily summary level so much less storage requirements.

Depends on why you want to purge data though...
