What is needed for sms alerts on ipmonitor running inside esx server

Can anyone tell me what i need to send sms alerts from ipmonitor which is running inside vmware.

My main alerts are sent via email but i need something to send me an alert if the mailserver goes down

Do i just need a modem and ipmonitor does the rest or do i need to subscribe to some sort of paging service or sms service

Also as it is running inside vmware is there any other methods of doing this as conencting a modem is not easy

what is V2Ping?

V2P stands for Virtual-to-Physical. It's when you migrate your virtual server back to a physical box. It's the opposite of P2V (Physical-to-Virtual), which is the usual direction.

To still get alerts when everything has turned to custard you need a GSM modem (not a standard modem). It has a serial or USB interface to connect to your phsyical ipMonitor server and a cellular radio to connect to a GSM network. Insert a SIM card, attach the modem to your server, configure it up in ipMonitor and reconfigure your alerts. It may get a bit involved but choosing a recommended modem will make it easier. Search this forum to see what others have used successfully. We use a MultiTech MTCBA-G-F1.

Don't know if you really want SMS, or if you just want text messaging.

You should be able to send an email to your cell phone directly, which will in turn create a text message. You just need the phone number that you want to send the message to, and create the message.

But i would not be able to send an email if the email server was part of the outage

i just need to send a text or an alert to a mobile phone so i know that the email server is down

I think you just made an excellent case for V2P'ing your ipMonitor system. 1) You can easily attach a serial/USB GSM modem to a physical server/desktop. 2) Your ipMonitor system is then not so heavily dependent on the infrastructure that you're trying to monitor.

If you're serious about effectively monitoring your infrastructure, which it sounds like you are, then it's the absolute right thing to do (along with other things like monitoring using IP addresses instead of FQDNs so that you're not reliant on your DNS servers being up, etc.)

i haven't used this in awhile and for reasons other than ipmonitor but it may work for you who knows.

there is a command line smtp relay program called 'blat'. here is the link http://www.blat.net and the faq here http://www.blat.net/?faq/index.html

if you can get an external email server to allow 'blat' to work with it (maybe your isp provides email for you) then you can just run this off of any windows box. it's pretty simple to use. the command line syntax is here http://www.blat.net/syntax/syntax.html.

for your alert in ipmonitor you would use the 'external process' option and call 'blat' along with any variables required to send the email for that alert. as stated previously most sms numbers have an email address also associated with them. just find yours and email your phone's sms 'email address'.
