Volume polling

Question

Let me start off with, I'm new to Solarwinds.  I've created an alert for a volume when it drops below 10% available.  Problem is, in testing this against a server that I force into the condition, it takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes to recognize the condition and then sends the alert.  How can I decrease the polling interval so that when the condition exists, we get the alert within 1-2 minutes?

This is how I have things configured.

Node DeviceType is equal to P1SERVER

Volume Volume Type is equal to Fixed Disk

Volume Volume Percent Available is less than 10%

Trigger condition evaluation is 1 minute, no condition must exist for period.

Orion Polling Settings

Polling Intervals

Default Node Poll 120 seconds

Default Interface Poll Interval 120 seconds

Default Volume Poll Interval 60 seconds

Polling Stats Intervals

Node Stats 15 minutes

Node Volume Stats 2 minutes

We have a total of <1000 nodes in our environment that we are monitoring, 580 cisco devices and 250 windows/linux servers

Is this the best way to do it?

Thanks for the shout-out jamison.jennings‌. Another tip: Don't "force" the alert into a condition. Instead, set up your alert the way you want and then change the trigger in a way that keeps the alert logic in tact but will trigger naturally. In your case, you've got: when volume utilization > 90% change it to when machine name = "servername" (and) volume utilization < 90% Then you can use the button to clear the alert to keep re-testing it. Once your alert (including the message text, etc) works the way you want you can remove the machine name and change < to > and you will be good to go. PROTIP: Check the "this alert will trigger on xx devices" message to know whether you are about to kick of a ticket storm BEFORE you click that last "Save" button.

You can go to Settings/Orion Polling Settings/"Default Volume Statistics Poll Interval" and adjust to how often you want to poll your Volume Stats.

Since you are new to SolarWinds, just keep in mind that this could cause performance issues if you set this value too low.
