How to create one Alert for every interface on every node for status UP/DOWN

Is there a way to create and alert for every interface hanging off every device node, or maybe just the cisco devices? One that will report when an interface will go down and up. Instead of having to crate an expression for each Node/interface individually.

Absolutely. Just don't be specific about the node/interface when you're writing your trigger conditions.

The trigger type should be 'interface' (that first dropdown box in the Trigger Conditions) dialog, and then the sole condition should be 'Interface Status is equal to Down'. You won't want to use the default Reset Condition (reset when trigger condition is no longer true) because interfaces can be Up, Down, Unknown, etc. So, the reset condition should be 'Interface Status is equal to Up'.

If you want to limit it to just Cisco devices, you can add another condition 'Node Vendor is equal to Cisco' and that will limit it a bit more.

That begs the next question - if I have one alert for every interface in my network, how do I control who gets the email? It's possible there's only one person in your organization that cares about interfaces, but it's unlikely, right? For that you want to create a node (or interface) custom property called Responsible_Person (or something similar) that contains 1 or more email addresses separated by commas.

Then your trigger and reset email actions can look like this:

To: ${Node.Responsible_Person} (or ${Interface.Responsible_Person})

Is there a way to pull out the Name field from an interface? I am talking about the Name field under the Interface ID field. FOr each interface there is two name fields. I was wondering if it would be easy to pull out the top one to use as an alert variable.

Ok in the documentation I found the following variable:

${InterfaceCaption}

User-assigned name for this interface

It doesn't seem to work, but ${Caption} does pull the User-assigned name.

It looks like maybe that's a typo in the manual - the variable should be ${Interface.Caption} or ${Caption} (if you're using an Interface alert). I always prefer to use the former so that my meaning is explicit.

Try the insert variable button at the bottom and look through the variables for the interface. If you're looking for the name that's in the interface's description, I believe that's called 'Interface Alias' in the list.
