Cattools Freeware is unable to connect to SMTP server

Hi,

I'm currently evaluating Kiwi Cattools using the freeware edition.

I want to test SMTP email alert so I configured my SMTP server/port and email address.

However, if I try to send a test email, it tells me

"Mail error: Unable to connect to XXXXX:"

On the same PC, I can send an email through SMTP with Outlook. Even if I monitor the network traffic, I can't see anything happening on port 25.

What should I check? Is the freeware edition supposed to be able to send SMTP email?

Are you using McAfee on the test machine?

If so, check the Access Protection logs as McAfee has a default behaviour that blocks programs (unless explicitly excluded) from sending data to port 25 (spam sending protection). If McAfee is blocking the email attempts you will need to add the .exe file to the list of allowed programs.

If you have specified a server name, try using the server IP address instead and see if this works.

Hi,

I tried to put the IP address and once I press "Test Email", 1 sec later I get the error msg "Err#: 10061 - Connection is forcefully rejected".

When I put the DNS name, it instead takes a few sec and tells me "Unabel to connect to xxx".

And as I said, the same test with Outlook works just fine...

10061 - Connection is forcefully rejected error would normally occur when the target computer actively refuses the connection attempt being made to it. It sounds like your CatTools SMTP configuration is not valid (probably credentials).

Check your email account configuration in OutLook to see if you have specified credentials for you POP/SMTP account.

If so, then in CatTools, change the Type: field on the 'Primary SMTP Server Setup' tab to POP Authentication and enter your POP credentials.

Are you using McAfee on the test machine?

Well, you nailed the issue exactly!

I had both McAfee antivirus and firewall. At first, I did disable the firewall and it still wasn't working but I didn't check the antivirus!

In McAfee Access Protection, I had to add both running CatTools EXE to the exception list of the Prevent Mass Mailing protection.

Good catch nrms.

You may also like to consider adding an exception for the diff.exe program also.

We have had issues with the Symantec Endpoint Protection causing the diff.exe to not work correctly; so it may well be an issue for McAfee too.

Hi Steve,

I guess you are talking about the "Compare" feature?

If so, I just tested it and it works fine without an additional exception on McAfee.

However, as you said, this is one thing to keep in mind. Maybe it could be good for SW to specify those things in the documentation.
