Advanced Alerts vs. Basic Alerts

If I understand this correctly, "Advanced Alerts" will be displayed under "Alerts" in Orion, while "Basic Alerts" will be displayed under "Events"? Is this correct?

Also, what are some best practices you all have set up for Basic and/or Advanced alerts? Seems like we have every little event monitored "interface state changes" and so on. Is this standard practice?

I have a very simple best practice - only use advanced alerts & turn of basic alerts.

Advanced alerts are far more powerful, being sql driven from the database. The only downside being they are regularly polled (eg every minute) whereas basic alerts are triggered in real time when the device is polled.

I've not found a reason to use basic alerts for many years now.

So i take it you don't monitor interface status changes and other minor details?

Sure I do, I use advanced alerts to monitor interface status & alert when interface status is not equal to up. I do have a whole load of other criteria also, but the basics are on status...

Thanks for the reply. One more thing I wanted to clarify is "Events vs. Alerts". Advanced Alerts go to Alerts and basic alerts go to Events?

I was following your suggestion, but now see a need for basic alerts. I'm going to set up basic alerts for the SQL stack, so if the SQL Orion database goes down then we will still see alerts for any SQL outage. The Orion server is moved to a physical server so it can report on outages in virtual servers also. (Due to the special demands of the NTA database and limitations in our environment, that server is physical too.) All other alerts will be advanced alerts, and I'll filter out the SQL stack in advanced alerts so we don't get redundant alerts.
