What is causing poor performance for my website?

This is going to vary on many different factors. Bandwidth for both you and the end user requesting the application, performance of the machine the site/application is sitting on and is it self-contained or is it distributed, does it call out to third party component outside of your control such as a showing a Twitter feed as an example, etc.

In my experience, performance can generally be broken down to two areas:

1. Page load time - this is dependent on the elements in the page itself, number of objects, size of images, use of CDN, etc. Google pagespeed and webpagetest.org are good resources for helping to identify areas for improvement of any given page.

2. Load performance - how a site performs when it comes under load - network, server, database, etc can each have their own performance characteristics. Having decent monitoring on the system components is useful for pinpointing trouble areas when the site gets slow due to load.
